LA SISOMICINA EN EL TRATAMIENTO DE INFECCIONES QUIRURGICAS GRAVES
Abstract
Twenty-five adult patients in the surgical service of San Juan de Dios Hospital (18 males, 7 females) with an average age of 32. 2, an average weight of 52. 3 and average height of 1. 62, with a variety of bacterial infections related to trauma and surgical procedures and due to Sisomicin sensitive microorganisms, received from seven to 13 days total dosages from 1. 050 to 2. 025 mg of Sisomicin intramuscularly at 8 hours intervals. Twenty-three patients survived and two died, 13 were completely cured and six showed marked improvement.
The statistical analysis showed a significant decrease in maximal daily temperature and WBC during the treatment period (P<0. 001 and P<0. 01). With the exception of the two fatalities, all other patients showed definite clinical improvement as evidenced by disappearance, or decrese in the amount of purulent secretion and of the local signs of inflamation.
The average values for hemoglobin, hematocrit, SGOT and glucose did not show a statistically significant change when comparing the pre and post treatment values. The average creatinine and bilirrubin values decreased after treatment. (P<0. 05 and P<0. 05). Only two patients complained of slight pain at the injection site. Three patients reported transient dizzinees and two transient nystagmus. None of them had evidence of vestibular damage at the follow-up visits.
Intramuscular Sisomicin at a dosage of 150 mg a day, for seven to ten days was effective in the control and eradication of a variety of bacterial infections in a group of seriously ill surgical cases.
