Abstract

A review of 10. 338 autopsies comprising a 20 year period (1. 954 1. 974), at the University Hospital of San Juan de Dios and of 2. 504 during 12 years (1. 962 1. 974) at the Hospital Militar Central, both from Bogota, was made by the authors.

Nineteen (45. 2%) from 42 cases dying from malaria fullfiled the diagnostic criteria of malarial encephalopathy presented in this study.

The authors believe that this is the first attempt to correlate the severity of the clinical syndrome of the malarial encephalopathy with the histopathological picture, which consist in a diffuse and selective damage to the vaso-myelin unit of the brain as is well illustrated in this study.
