B-learning to develop professional skills while caring for ambulatory patients

Abstract

This article presents a teaching proposal with a social constructivist model conceptualizing the innovations in internal medicine residents’ practical training for treating ambulatory patients. This proposal is illustrated with type 2 diabetes as a prevalent disease.
This breakthrough arises from the author’s journey as an internist and educator, especially with the study “Construction and evaluation of a professional skill profile in internal medicine.” The article discusses the  general and specific objectives, justification, teaching proposal with didactic strategies and actions, type 2 diabetes line of research, concept of professional skills, teaching model and B-learning, practical training in the outpatient department, opportunities for improvement and final thoughts.
Professors and program coordinators are invited to reflect on and review the time devoted to ambulatory patient care and service during residency, as well as the development of medical residents’ professional skills.
