Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura
A rare diagnosis with high morality
Abstract
We present the case of a black adult male who debuted with severe thrombotic microangiopathy due to multiple organ dysfunction and was diagnosed with difficult-to-treat idiopathic thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura due to its resistance to plasma exchange. He required additional treatment including rituximab and N-acetylcysteine. The patient had a favorable outcome, and we emphasize the importance of recognizing the condition early in order to begin treatment early, which significantly reduces mortality.
