The approach to symptomatic hypoglycemia in a non-diabetic patient
Concerning a case with a solid pancreatic lesion
Abstract
Tumor-mediated hypoglycemia is a rare phenomenon that requires a comprehensive approach, where it is essential to establish a precise diagnosis in order to define the interventions to be followed. The tumor that most frequently produces hypoglycemia is insulinoma. However, a variety of solid and hematologic neoplasms can cause paraneoplastic hypoglycemia by different pathophysiologic mechanisms. We present the clinical case of a patient with symptomatic hypoglycemia in the context of an active solid organ malignancy in advanced stage, where a comprehensive approach was performed to determine the etiology and thus the treatment and prognosis in relation to hypoglycemia.
